Aurora VI Occurred at 0840, lasted 5 seconds, buildings trembled for several seconds. Deep toned sound like a big explosion followed by jar as of immense safe falling onto cushion, then a tremble and it was over. Residents thought there had been an explosion at a plant and rushed into streets, residents thought a boiler had exploded, reports of one shock, generally felt especially those inside buildings, intense excitement in all parts of city, sleepers awakened, fixtures swung, widely felt throughout Fox Valley and Will County. A few chimneys toppled from local residences, chinaware broken in many homes, many pieces jarred from shelves and thrown against each other on sideboards and tables Smoke from previously dismantled chimney caused neighbor to call Fire department, believing the residence was burning. False alarms at two other locations also called into Fire department. On the west side, occupants of homes, stores and offices rushed to the streets, dishes rattled from shelves in all parts of city, chandeliers were broken, lamps tumbled from stands and tables, chimneys thrown from roofs of houses. Sleeping resident thought a barred had dropped in the cellar, chimney dislodged from roof, brick tumbled to ground where paving operations are being carried out, farmer reported 50 dozen of eggs were shaken from shelves of his home, chimney torn from moorings, man jarred from ladder, nearby workers fell upon knees or rushed wildly about grounds, yelling. Teachers and pupils at two schools believed something had gone wrong in basement, tremors more severe than any previously experienced, woman fainted, east of town a team of horses runs away, high school student becomes hysterical. Gas company reports several hundred/several thousand dollars loss in broken gas connections, irons shaken from tops of stove, wild rumors started, downtown building emptied of inhabitants, people in basements did not feel shock so much as those on first floor and they in turn not so much as those in upper floors. Shaking of buildings distinctly noticeable, pots and pans rattled in cupboards, dishes knocked from plate rails and tables, widely reported to Beacon office, no damage. Claims of greater severity on the hills in town than in the lower places. Factory offices, shops, schools emptied as people moved to see where explosion or what the trouble was. Some children who had started to school were taken home until the scare was over. Mothers gathered children from school grounds. Five minutes after first tremor, streets were filled with frightened and nervous people. Person thought stove had exploded. Children made frantic effort to keep bookcases and other furniture from falling over in one home, recognized as an earthquake, pictures swung, several reports of broken of dishes, fallen of bric-a-brac, rattling dishes. All clocks stopped in courthouse at 8:30. Shock lasted between 5 and 30 seconds. Well ran dry, gradually water found its way back to ordinary levels. The stand pipe at the Aurora water works damaged, top of 150 foot pipe is 14 inches out of plumb.
Chimneys wrecked, frame houses slipped from foundations, large cracks in asphalt pavement, two/three fires started, people panic, unsubstantiated rumor that an Aurora man was killed, overturned stove, felt by everyone, falling of chimneys and other parts of buildings. Vibrations knocked down barns, and telegraph poles, made pedestrians ill, chimney fell at plant of Aurora Brewing company, schools closed, cracked walls.

Bloomington IV Felt by hundreds at 0840, lasted a minute or more, low, indistinct rumbling, heaving of floor or ground, dizzy rocking of walls, nauseous feeling, felt on higher floors, several reports of shaking on upper floors, some portions of city shook worse than others, like elevator falling, distinct jar like moving heavy furniture, noticeable shock. Chimney fell, ceiling cracked, person shaken off stool.
It has been discovered the earthquake of Wednesday so badly damaged the county jail building it will have to be rebuilt. (Story recanted in Bloomington Pantagraph 5/28)

Byron III Shaken but in no instances was there serious damage and no injury to limb. A report was current that this town had been practically wiped off the map, but it was a dream. Residents were aroused but little excitement prevailed.

Chicago and suburbs shaken so hard that chimneys were toppled over and other light damage was done. Professor Cox says, “there was a perceptible shaking of the earth at 0840, lasting 3 to 4 seconds, motion from north to south.” Chimneys thrown down on the West and North Sides, several women thrown from their feet, large flat buildings shaken and families ran out fearing collapse, some in fear for hours after the shock. Many dilapidated old structures collapsed in different parts of the city. Chandeliers shaken down, street lamps wrecked. Felt at 0830. Streator man visiting Chicago describes sensation as ‘falling out of an airship five miles in the air’. Four fires reported in various parts of the city an hour after the shock. Almost impossible to get correct telephone connections owing to swaying of wires damp from last night’s rain against each other. Earthquake was particularly felt in North and West sections of the city, bric-a-brac thrown from mantles, windows rattled, dishes broken, chimneys toppled over. Hundreds were awakened, beds swayed, dishes smashed, telephones out, electric apparatus damaged. Safes moved, wall decorations torn from fastenings. City Harbor Commission Chairman states ridge that divides Des Plains river valley from Lake Michigan shaken hardest (west and north parts of the city). Four seconds between first and second shocks. Clearly felt in homes and small downtown buildings, caused excitement along lakeshore. Feeling of earth sinking, then rocking, pronounced in highest buildings, objects slipped back and forth, followed by another sinking sensation and again rocking. Most occupants of big office buildings did not know there had been an earthquake. One to three distinct tremors. Frame houses rocked almost from foundations, skyscrapers shaken, furniture thrown about. Reports of shock came from about 35 towns within a 100 mile radius of Chicago. Central Chicago was comparatively immune. Several hundred dollars damage to small pipe leads of Western United Gas and Electric. Five second duration. Geology professor recognizes it as an earthquake, noted occurrence at 0837:20, shock travelled from west to east. Chicago and suburban hospitals vibrated, patients excited. Chicago (Loop/Downtown, Near North, Lincoln Park, Near West) IV Felt at 0836/0840, lasted four or five seconds, lasted about a minute. Downtown buildings and homes shook, pronounced on high floors. Shock nearly imperceptible in buildings with caisson foundations, buildings on floating piles swayed. Lights swayed from north to south and noticed by all, disturbance of delicate rain-weighing mechanism, buildings rocked, shook, swayed, work on tables jarred, tables and floors clearly moved, several slight tremors, clearly a shaking. Telephone receiver knocked off hook, gas fixtures broken, gas jet swayed from north to south, glass shade fell on floor, person struck by falling plaster, knocking her down and wounding scalp, furnishings displaced. Pictures jarred, chairs rocked, Many thought it was due to blasting, person thought explosion had occurred, desk moved, person awoken by spouse, people frightened, structure trembled. Two mild shocks noticed by persons seated quietly. Many residents of downtown buildings did not know there had been an earthquake until told. Felt at a number of downtown structures. Some observed movement from east to west. Person thrown out of bed, suffered bruises, gas jets shook, furniture danced, bed swayed, dresser toppled over residents alarmed, occupants frightened. Substantial brick structure shaken so pictures on walls swayed and dishes knocked to the floor/rattled. Woman thrown to floor with a tray of dishes, frightened. Dixon VI 0837, lasted 15-30 seconds, one of the most pronounced ever, felt all over city, portion of chimney destroyed, person severely bruised head on counter, stove pipe knocked down, goods shaken off top shelves, people frightened, many ran from homes, windows rattled, downtown buildings shook, people on street did not feel quake, picket fences shaken, thought there was a blast at local cement works, residents had to grab hold of chairs to keep from losing balance, books fell from desk, room swung, plaster fell, propped windows dropped shut.
Slight trembling at 0830, lasting several seconds, 0840/0846, 3 minute duration, shock began at 0940, gas fires put out, rattled dishes on/from tables.

Wall swayed causing instrument at phone company to dance, people ran into street, general alarm, pictures on walls and dishes in cupboards all over town crashed to floor, clock thrown from shelf, dishes clattered, crockery thrown from shelves, fixtures hung from ceiling swung, felt by everyone indoors, stones on the front of building cracked, person thrown to floor, two shocks, practically all buildings emptied, little damage, windows cracked, watches and clocks stopped (8:40)

Elgin VI 0840, 30 second duration, lasted 15-30 seconds, two distinct shocks, the first 6 seconds in duration then second jar, one report of three shocks, 12 seconds in duration, 2-3 shocks at least, first shock causes plaster to fall and was smaller of two. Felt by nearly all/noticed throughout city, heavy furniture and machines shaken and moved, equipment in watch factory jarred, trembled and rattled as if an explosion had occurred, people excited, glasses tinkled, pictures shaken from walls at 0841, lamp swung, business blocks trembled, windows rattled, chairs and tables shook, small furniture moved/danced, chairs knocked over, bookcases disarranged, dishes rattled and fell, china/dishes broken, dishes thrown to floor/crashed from shelves. Hundreds fled from homes, people empty buildings, some terror-stricken, some curious, bridge rocked, people had difficulty standing (on bridge), people thought train had struck bridge, houses and buildings shook, seemed like elevator had fallen, many rushed into corridors, seemed to last half a minute, little or no damage. At residences, pictures shook on walls and lay sideways afterward, dishes and windows rattled, items of dresser shook, entire house shook, houses shook as if being pried up by crowbar, toast shook t from woman’s hand, furniture moved, dishes fell from plate racks, book cases disarranged, resident caught chair as it fell to floor. People frightened, recognized as earthquake. Residents near asylum thought it was blasting, explosions or heavy car. Person seated on trunk felt trunk shake beneath him, did not realize it was an earthquake. Employees of watch factory excited/disconcerted, some hysterical, crying, afraid, left benches, huddled together, three distinct shocks, prepared to leave building, but did not. Same reports from nearby factory. Distinctly felt at shoe company, hospital patients fearful/uneasy/intensely alarmed, general scare prevented, employees noted two distinct shocks, each six seconds in duration. Main building (of better construction than annex) seemed most affected, second vibration more severe, startled superintendent, many inmates calm, did not notice earthquake. Jarred city throughout, general alarm felt. On opera house block, chairs rattled, heavy electric fan was moved to the edge of a high shelf, glasses on bars of several saloons clinked. City hall occupants on lower floor failed to notice shock, those higher up saw small articles of furniture move and felt two shocks distinctly. Similar reports from of shaking at other offices, factories and public buildings, machines on third floor rocked, oil cans wobbled, doors of bookcases shook open, furniture rocked, employees feared explosion in nearby structure. In hundreds of homes, china in china closets tinkled, glass broken in one or two cases by being thrown from shelves, lamps were tipped over, doors shook as though vibrated by heavy machinery, windows shaken in casings, walls creaked, hanging lamp swung, furniture moved about. At publishing house, three distinct shocks, chairs swayed, occupants surprised, workers prepared to depart/left building through windows, publishing house is one story and of latest factory/office plan (modern construction), located on a bluff. Shock felt plainly at planning mill, caused person in revolving chair to revolve, some machines had to be reset before use, three dizzy whirls felt. Felt floor wave, water in 2nd floor tank slopped, resident thought furnace had exploded, pictures that had been set against the wall during house cleaning, fell to floor. Spring on electrician’s watch broke by movement of earth, recognized as earthquake by survivor of 1906 San Francisco quake, many called switchboards to question nature of disturbance and ask if there had been damage. Evanston IV Many noticed the earthquake shock at 0840, majority of people unaware that anything had occurred, vault contents audibly rattled, person awoken, bed quivered perceptibly, books jumped about on shelves, very perceptible trembling but did not know what it was, it was over quickly. Chicago papers report occupants of Davis street rushing from stores and offices, but personal visits to these same people resulted in the discovery that only two persons had noticed the shock. One of them thought an unusually heavy dray had rumbled by. Geology Professor from Northwestern noted movement from east to west, windows rattled, lasted about three seconds. Water in glass was disturbed, bookcase moved slightly (1.5 inches), empty chair struck person’s elbow, disturbances not thought to be seismic, desk moved slightly.

Rocked eastern and western sections of the city as to cause real terror, not felt in the valley (downtown) in which business houses are located. Felt most over the second bluff, houses rocked on foundations, some scared, some rushed from houses. Considerable excitement on west side, most thought another explosion had occurred at the steel mill. Several reports indicating the earthquake was felt more distinctly in certain parts of town and not at all in other parts (e.g. not felt along base of the hill; felt on second bluff just a block away). Several reports describing sounds heard: rumble heard, rumbling like blasting operations, peculiar noise like rolling heavy barrels on the floor, heard two distinct shocks, low rumbling sound, on east side of city two or three sharp reports of sound and shock. Pictures shaken from walls, several reports of broken dishes, merchandise on shelves toppled over and tossed topsy-turvy, dishes fell to floor, vases toppled over, lid knocked from top of stove, mirrors shaken off walls in many houses, chairs upset, furniture was upset, furniture was heaped about in a disorderly way, loosened ceiling so that it fell on Friday evening, a few chimneys fell or were damaged, chimney knocked down. People stopped work to see what the trouble was, people ran out doors to see what had happened. Streets filled with anxious people questioning what had happened. families so alarmed they fled into streets for safety, stores and residences trembled, residents of several blocks ran into street, frightened, Only a few felt the quake along the west riverbank. Resident felt what seemed to be horizontal movement, steady shake lasting 20 seconds, house moved an inch. Some thought an explosion had occurred but heard no noise beyond that of the house, house swayed thought there had been an explosion in the cellar, some greatly alarmed, neighbor came running in, felt by everyone in the neighborhood, . Second shock greater than first and was felt about three minutes later. Telephone inquiries came from everywhere in town. One big shock, then a smaller on a couple of minutes later. Steady tremble lasting about three minutes, Traveled from south to north, distinctly felt on east side of city in many localities, ascribed to blasting in quarries, building rocked. Report from a Chicago paper that Western United Gas and Electric mains were badly affected is denied by the company. No trouble was experienced with interruption of gas flow or by any telegraph or telephone company.

Morris VII 0836, severely shaken, shock lasted a moment, people rushed from homes and businesses thinking explosion had occurred nearby, entire populace was upon streets within a few seconds, factory workers jumped out of windows thinking walls would fall upon them, people remained nervous for several hours unable to return to work, all thought homes and buildings would fall, people were in a state of panic. Several reports of people jumping out of windows, employees alarmed, customers go into street and look up at buildings, hospital patients on 3rd floor were greatly disturbed. False reports circulated that shaking was due to explosion of an oil well at Lamoille. Person fainted, person took to bed immediately, several on verge of being overcome, many people trembled for hours. Building shook, dishes rattled and fell, plaster dropped from ceilings, chimneys crumbled, water in Illinois River shot up as if dynamite had exploded in bottom of stream, artesian wells that had gone dry or were flowing small streams gushed forth in all their force after the disturbance. At a farm east of town, a well suddenly stopped then gushed ten feet in the air like a geyser, another almost dry burst into full flow. River seemed to boil and then shoot up. Coal miners rushed to surface, coal fell from roofs, dust shot up out of shafts. People driving in vehicles say they did not feel shock and were surprised to see people rush into streets. Rear addition and chimney separated from main structure leaving two inch opening, plaster knocked off ceiling, occupants thought boiler had exploded, rushed out of the building, plaster in basement fell, struck person, bricks fell off chimney. Fifty or more chimneys were either knocked off or cracked, nine specific locations or addresses with reports of either, “chimney(s) off”, or “chimney down”. Reports from the country say that many chimneys were knocked off. China closet upset and dishes broken, dishes fell from shelves and broken, packages fell from shelf, bottles fell from shelf, bottles off shelf, plaster fell, negatives knocked off shelves, relays jarred loose, all [telephone] bells rang (at telephone office), tombstones swayed and some were loosened from foundations, many pieces of bric-a-brac were knocked off shelves and pictures fell, hand painted. Dish fell and broke, a mirror turned completely around, plate glass mirror lying on a table was broken, an electric meter fell from its fastenings, vases fell off piano and a small safe rolled across the floor, every prism on the chandeliers fell off, person fell to floor and was unable to get up.
Farmers say that horses and cows in pastures became panic-stricken. Many have not yet recovered from the nervousness which followed the earth’s rumbling, people fear repetition of the quake, many would not go to bed or refused to sleep in brick buildings. Canard circulated that government had issued warning that another shock would occur and timid ones were in a constant state of fear. Bather who had been through the San Francisco earthquake rushed from the building in robe and would not return. A usually cool person grabbed her parrot and rushed from the house. Several fainted, some in hysterics afterwards. Some could not return to work, some took to drink to overcome fear. Many inquiries at the telephone station. As people have had time to look over their property they find the damages more extensive than first reported. Many have discovered cracks in their buildings of in concrete work. Fifty or more chimneys were either knocked off or cracked. Mayor urges that people inspect their chimneys and ascertain if there is any damage. It is feared that fires will result in places where the occupants do not know of damage to their chimneys. Some have discovered that their cisterns were cracked, letting out the water. False rumor that Kendrick hall (Catholic parochial school) was damaged, it was not.

Shock felt more distinctly on second and third floors of office buildings than on ground floors, roused most from bed, loud rumbling for a few seconds, continued rumbling, people feared buildings would fall, ran outside. Some thought there was blasting in Illinois River/on the bridge, more perceptible on the bluffs in north and south Ottawa than in central Ottawa.

Felt distinctly at Glen Oak school, two shocks, walls trembled and vibrated, bottles shaken off shelves, piano tingled, first shock lasts several seconds than second came. All offices of courthouse felt shock, elevator operator stopped car, many thought mighty explosion has occurred, shock more distinct in larger offices of city, shook desks and office furniture in an alarming manner. West Bluff chandeliers were shaken loose from ceilings, people rush into streets, Bradley Polytechnic buildings trembled as if struck with mighty force, glasses and bottles shaken from shelves and fell to floor, felt throughout building. All bridge Junction operators felt switching towers shake, McClure Ave, received severe shock, several pans slopped water onto the floor, Union depot occupants were shaken up, Isolation Hospital patients panic for fear it would come down upon its occupants, whole interior filled with fine dust, no one injured (hospital had previously been partly destroyed by fire). Chimney on west bluff demolished. “Our new instruments which the government has provided for this station for the recording of earthquakes have not arrived yet, and we had to rely wholly on what we felt and experienced at the bureau”.

Waukegan VI Slight shock/plainly felt at 0830/0840, two shocks, 10 seconds apart, second shock shorter duration, lasted three seconds, lasted a minute, traveled from north to south and west to east, recognized as an earthquake, like a rush of great wind, reports of hearing earthquake. Especially felt along north shore from Zion city to Chicago, felt most severely on the “Island”. Widely felt, including at the university and jail. Trembling, buildings shook, dishes rattled, pictures thrown to one side, pictures fell from wall. Numerous reports of houses, dishes, pitchers, and items on store shelves rattling or moving, windows shaking and rattling, and furniture trembling or moving (chairs, tables, and beds moved, bookcases swayed, bookcases teetered). Numerous reports of books, bottles, goods off shelves, shelves gave up their burdens, chandeliers swayed, plate glass swayed, fern tipped over. Kitten thrown across floor, shook sewing machine from east to west, scared people greatly, person dropped teacup, children leaped from bed, broken plaster, doors opened, numerous reports of people rushing out of residences and downtown buildings fearing collapse, alarmed, frightened, or greatly concerned, people curious but not alarmed. Felt at the mill, not felt at the normal school or hospital. Glass shattered, safe rocked, safe rolled on timbers, machines swayed, dogs barked immediately after the shock, chinaware and glasses shook, girl knocked off chair, goods knocked off shelves, bed shook, “saw” the shock, a couple of bricks fell out of the corner of the old fire station, two reports of plaster falling from ceiling, several reports of cracked wallpaper, plaster knocked off walls in a number of homes, bottle fell to floor and broke, one or two chimneys fell, chimney toppled on a St. James Street house. People first believed a powder mill had exploded, thought heavy machinery has collapsed. Noticed by all, heavy vibrations (like a streetcar passing), people in upper floors ran to street, people awoken, felt house distinctly raise then tremble violently, sidewalks seen to tremble and slightly heave, clocks stopped, people getting on [street] cars wobbled, sign painters hand wobbled, person dropped cup. Grain bins cracked open at feed store, large crack developed along the front of the Gazette building. Princess confectionary store severely shaken, soda fountain in danger of toppling. Earthquake is believed to have loosened fasteners of water tank in Odd fellows’ hall causing it to fall the evening of 5/26. Wave action on Lake Michigan stilled and waters out on the lake appeared to rise higher in the center than other places, the churning and rising continued for ten or twelve minutes. Two distinct shocks felt at Yerkes observatory at 0837, 1.5 minute duration, north-south motion not felt on ground, noticeable in building, pronounced on 3rd floor, water and milk in cups spilled, no damage. Felt strongly in larger buildings and lasted 15-20 seconds, no damage, distinct rumble, not felt in some locations, shaking followed by rocking, movement was north-south or northwest-southeast, resident ran outside, plates fell off of plate rack, two shocks, desks and glass cases shook, Heavy typesetting machine moved, imposing stone moved and distinct jar felt by those at desks. Clocks stopped, lasted four seconds, telephone wires swayed. No noticeable shocks felt. Platteville V Shaken at 0830, 0835, two shocks felt, lasted several seconds. Shook dishes off of shelves, toppled clocks, frightened many, cracked south wall of Mining School from ground to third story, student exited building, weather instruments recorded two distinct shocks, windows rattled, buildings and furniture shook perceptibly, not as noticeable in frame homes. Recognized at once as earthquake, dishes rattled on tables, china closets groaned, machinery shook perceptibly, felt in all parts of city and by almost everyone. Fears of underground workings in mines would be destroyed – only slight damage done in shafts and underground workings.
Damage of great extent has been reported throughout the city, State School of Mining is badly cracked and twisted and it will have to be rebuilt/torn down.

Objects on desks and wall of tall buildings rattled, considerable alarm and fright, not felt in some locations.
Also reported 0842, 0845, shortly before 0900, river rose one foot/half a foot, all residents felt shock, cement sidewalks cracked, considerable excitement.
