26 August 2024–Open every February and July, SSA’s grant programs remain one of the most important ways that SSA helps develop a skilled workforce of seismologists who will continue to advance earthquake science. Funded by generous donations from our members to the Society’s General Fund, as well as a surplus from our operations, SSA awarded three Community Grants and four Global Travel Grants to the recipients listed below.
Community Grants
The SSA Community Grants program supports small scientific conferences, workshops and events that provide our members and future seismologists with opportunities for training, learning and networking. After receiving a record number of applications, SSA awarded three Community Grants to these members:
- Leila Mizrahi and Vanille Ritz of the Swiss Seismological Service at ETH Zurich were awarded $4,000 to support the Statistical Seismology Hackathon for Early Career Scientists. This one-week event will bring together early-career scientists and Ph.D. students to tackle unsolved problems in statistical seismology. Unlike traditional conferences, participants will learn through hands-on collaboration, fostering debate, dialogue and exploration of high-risk, high-impact research avenues.
- Julie Elliott of Michigan State University and Donna Shillington of Northern Arizona University received $2,000 to organize “The Alaska-Aleutian Subduction Zone: Integrated Science and Future Opportunities Workshop.” The workshop will examine Alaska’s subduction zone, focusing on megathrust earthquakes, slip behaviors and megathrust properties. Goals include summarizing data, identifying gaps, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and generating a guiding document for future research and proposals, while expanding the research community.
- Joseph Phillips and Joseph Byrnes of Northern Arizona University, along with Claire Richardson of Arizona State University, were awarded $4,000 to organize the ACCESS Second Annual Meeting. Building on the January 2024 meeting, this event will strengthen ties between ASU, NAU and UA by sharing research, developing professional skills and fostering collaboration in seismology and geophysical processes. The meeting will create an inclusive space for geophysicists, with a focus on early-career and underrepresented individuals, aiming to advance research and grow the ACCESS community.
Global Travel Grants
SSA’s Global Travel Grants program offers early-career and student members financial support to participate in scientific conferences and workshops anywhere in the world. SSA awarded four Global Travel Grants to these student and early-career members:
- Saiful Islam Apu, University of Kansas, will attend the European Geosciences Union 2025 in Vienna, Austria.
- Phuc Mach, Georgia Institute of Technology, will travel to Belek, Antalya, Turkiye, for the 5th General Assembly Asian Seismological Commission.
- Rodrigo Leon Loya, Universidad de los Andes, will attend the 2024 Annual Meeting of the Unión Geofísica Mexicana in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico.
- Yiting Cai, Chalmers University of Technology, will travel to Vienna, Austria, for the European Geosciences Union 2025.
Both the Global Travel Grants program and Community Grants program will accept applications again in February 2025. Interested in supporting these programs? Make a gift to the General Fund today.
