25 April 2025–The newest recipients of an SSA Community Grant will work together to create a workshop focused on rising seismic activity across Nigeria and surrounding regions.
Community Grants
Following the February application cycle, two members were selected to receive SSA Community Grants.
Umar Afegbua Kadiri of the Centre for Geodesy and Geodynamics Nigeria and Maureen Chioma Umeh of the University of Nigeria Nsukka were awarded $5,000 to create the “Training Course on Seismological Data Acquisition and Processing Using SeisComP Software.” The hands-on workshop is designed to equip applied geophysics students with practical skills in modern earthquake monitoring and data processing. In response to the rising seismic activity across Nigeria and surrounding regions, the training will focus on real-time data acquisition and analysis using SeisComP software, with applications spanning local and global networks.
The 19 May workshop will be held at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, which hosts one of Nigeria’s active seismic stations. Participants will learn how to: install and operate SeisComP, process seismic data and use essential Linux commands. The course will include a live data acquisition demonstration from the Awka seismic station, providing students with critical, hands-on experience to support Nigeria’s growing earthquake monitoring infrastructure.
Funded largely by donations to the General Fund and open twice-a-year to every SSA member, the Community Grants program supports the development of a skilled workforce of seismologists.
The Community Grants program will accept applications again in July 2025. Interested in supporting this program? Make a gift to the General Fund today.
