SSA’s newest grant program will help two more members share research and make connections worldwide.

Jeena Yun, student recipient

Following the February application cycle, Baoning Wu and Jeena Yun of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, have been selected to receive 2025 Paul Andrew Spudich Travel Grants.

Wu, an early-career SSA member, and Yun, a student member, will use their combined $4,590 in grant funding to participate in the September 2025 International Joint Workshop on Slow-to-Fast Earthquakes in Kochi, Japan. They will report back on their scientific journey in a future SSA News story.

Baoning Wu, early-career recipient

Established last fall by SSA’s Paul Andrew Spudich Fund, the grant program honors the life and scientific contributions of Paul Andrew Spudich (1950-2019), a giant in seismology and the SSA community. The late seismologist advanced the study of earthquake source physics and ground motion prediction throughout his distinguished career with the U.S. Geological Survey.  “[Paul] was very conscientious and thoughtful in all that he did, and we all benefited from his efforts,” said SSA Past President Ruth Harris.

SSA welcomes gifts to support this important fund and accepts grant applications every February.
