18 January 2024—Through the work of our Government Relations Committee, SSA is supporting the Congressional reauthorization of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP), through bipartisan legislation introduced today by U.S. Senators Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska).
NEHRP is the federal government’s coordinated long-term nationwide program to reduce risks to life and property resulting from earthquakes, and to facilitate social, economic and industrial recovery after a major earthquake. The NEHRP Reauthorization Act of 2024 will fund the program through Fiscal Year 2028.
“The Seismological Society of America and its members have long supported the importance of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program and are pleased to see Senator Padilla’s efforts to ensure its reauthorization,” said SSA President-elect Heather DeShon. “NEHRP has proven a resounding success in reducing earthquake-related losses in the United States, and its achievements in research, public awareness and building safety improvements have made the nation more resilient.”
