31 October — The SSA Board of Directors approved a new fee structure to provide more options for authors submitting to the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America (BSSA) and Seismological Research Letters (SRL). The price and policy changes are intended to
- Create a fair and equal fee structure between the two journals
- Offer open access options for authors
These changes will go into effect for papers submitted on 15 November 2024, and do not apply retroactively. For more information on the publishing policies for each journal, please see below.
Options for All
Our community is diverse, as are the papers that we publish. We recognize that a “one-size-fits-all” open access program isn’t the best option for a research community like ours, with authors at different stages of their career and who have different funding streams and budget priorities. When you’re ready to publish your research, we offer options to match your funder requirements, target audience and your personal preferences. You can choose the best way to share your work, each time you publish with SSA.
For BSSA and SRL:
Starting 15 November 2024, authors submitting papers to BSSA and SRL can choose a per-page rate of $195, regardless of the length of the paper. This is a change from our current tiered structure. Authors choosing this option can upload the Author’s Accepted Manuscript (AAM) to a publicly available repository without an embargo.
For authors who prefer immediate public access to the Version of Record (VoR) for their papers, we will offer a second option to choose a per-page Article Processing Charge (APC) at a rate of $300 per page.
For The Seismic Record (TSR):
TSR authors will continue to enjoy open access for this short-form, online-only journal. Authors pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) to make the published Version of Record (VoR) free to read and free to reuse under a Creative Commons license and without an embargo.
Support Seismology
When you publish in an SSA journal, you’re helping our society fulfill its mission of advancing scientific research, encouraging scientific collaboration and integrity and fostering the professional development of scientists and engineers across the globe. Roughly 65% of SSA’s revenue and all of its surplus are generated by its journals. We use that money to:
*Provide mentoring and professional development for seismologists at every stage of their career
* Host topical fall meetings to encourage scientific collaboration
* Support the SSA Annual Meeting, the premier seismology gathering for our community
* Fund travel by early career and student seismologists, giving them the opportunity to share their science, network and advance their careers
* Give a financial helping hand to community members who are seeking to make a difference through our Community Grants
* Advocate and engage on behalf of federal science policies impacting seismologists
* Provide our members with free access to SSA journals
