Historical Earthquakes of Korea

These tables list historic earthquakes that occurred from 2 to 1904 A.D., as compiled from various historical documents in Korea. Using the documents listed below, we have identified 2185 earthquakes (Appendix I) whose epicenters, Modified Mercalli intensities (MMI), and magnitudes are estimated by adopting simple rules discussed in the text. We also list some 'dubious' events (Appendix II) for which the documented phenomena cannot be attributable with certainty to those of earthquakes. The list of Appendix II also includes the events of the periods of the Three Kingdoms (37 B.C.-918 A.D.) and the Koryeo Dynasty (918-1392 A.D.) found in Jeungbomoonheonbigo only. Jeungbomoonheonbigo was published in the 18th century. Accounts of much earlier events can be traced back to the records of earlier documents in almost all cases; those that cannot are suspected of a transcription error.

All dates are in the Gregorian calendar.

Tables

Appendix I. Historical Korean earthquakes from 2 to 1904 A.D. Dates, epicenters, Modified Mercalli intensities, and estimated magnitudes are listed. An asterisk (*) in the REMARK column is for an earthquake reported with a local province name without a more specific town name. The epicentral error could be large for such an event. The numbers in the SOURCE column refer to the numbers in the documents listed below.

Appendix II. List of dubious events of 2-1904 A.D. from historical Korean documents. The numbers in the SOURCE column refer to the historic documents listed below.
